From Cancer Research to Restorative Dentistry

At Hoburne Dental, we often talk about the importance of using the latest techniques to ensure our patients get the best possible results. For me, that commitment isn’t just a professional duty—it’s a personal passion that has shaped my entire career.

Many of you know me as your dentist, but my journey started in the lab as a biomedical research scientist. After completing a PhD in Cancer Genetics, I transitioned into dentistry, driven by a desire to combine high-level science with hands-on patient care.

A Foundation in Advanced Care

You might wonder why a dentist who already holds a PhD and several degrees would head back to the lecture theatre. For me, the answer is simple: dentistry is constantly evolving, and I am driven to ensure my patients receive the most advanced care possible.

My career actually began as a biomedical research scientist, where I focused on cell biology and cancer genetics at Cardiff University. That “scientist’s brain” has never left me; I have always been driven to understand the why and the how behind every treatment. Whether it’s mastering BioClear restorations (levels 1-4) or staying current with contemporary doctrines, I want to be at the forefront of modern dentistry.

The UCL Distinction

One of the most defining chapters of my professional development was completing a three-year, part-time Diploma in Restorative Dental Practice at the Eastman Dental Hospital (UCL). I am incredibly proud to have been awarded a Distinction—the highest possible merit—for this work.

While I completed this qualification, the principles I mastered at UCL remain the backbone of my daily practice. Balancing clinical work here in Bournemouth with advanced academic study allowed me to bridge the gap between complex dental theory and the real-world, high-quality results I deliver to you in the chair.

What This Means for Our Patients

“Restorative dentistry” might sound technical, but at its heart, it’s about giving you back your confidence. It covers everything from complex crowns and bridges to the delicate art of composite bonding. By completing this Diploma at one of the world’s leading dental institutes, I’ve been able to refine the precision of my work, ensuring that restorations are not only beautiful but also long-lasting and functional.

A Relaxed Approach to High-Quality Care

While I take the science of dentistry very seriously, I know that for many of our patients, a visit to the dentist can be a source of anxiety. My goal is always to combine this high-level clinical expertise with a relaxed, friendly environment.

Whether we are discussing a complex restorative plan or you’re just coming in for a routine check-up, I want you to feel heard and at ease. I’ve found that my life outside the clinic—whether I’m skiing, cooking for my wife Suzie (also a local dentist!) and our two children, or playing guitar in a band—helps me keep that human connection that is so vital in healthcare.

Looking Forward

I am incredibly grateful to the team at Hoburne and to my patients for their support during my studies. I look forward to bringing these advanced techniques to the clinic every day to help the Christchurch community keep smiling for years to come.

If you’re interested in restorative treatments or simply want to chat about your dental health, feel free to book an appointment with me. I’d love to help!
